Deinococcus Radiodurans stops aging?
Deinococcus Radioduran's unique ability to protect itself from radiation is mainly
associated with the fact it can repair it's own DNA. However, scientist Michael Daly proves
this is not the case with Deinococcus Radiodurans. Mr. Daly states that D. Radiodurans
is able to repair it's proteins as well, and without the proteins, what would fix the DNA?
Deinococcus Radiodurans protects its proteins by amassing large amounts of
Manganese within their cells. This manganese helps eliminate "free radicals", or harmful chemicals
that damage proteins. Michael Daly is investigating this manganese, so that one day, it might be
possible to use this unique substance in medical care. For example, this Manganese could
be used to protect human cells from radiation treatments for cancer, or would even be able
to help prevent the process of aging.
